In the mesoclimate of Domokos, in the area of Vardali, lie our vineyards, beneath the mountainous mass of Kassidiaris and next to the castle of Ancient Proerna, which Strabo (Greek geographer, philosopher, and historian) lists within the Phthiotic kingdom of Achilles [θ 434].
Around 1920, the Gkanis family’s relationship with wine began, when Kostas Gkanis planted the first small vineyard with local varieties, shaped in the traditional cup form.
From then until 1940, he managed to make his wine known throughout the surrounding regions. Later, in 1967, Konstantinos took over, planting at an elevation of 160 m a small 10-stremma vineyard with local varieties.
In early 2004, Vaios, representing the fourth generation, as a result of his research and in collaboration with agronomists–viticulturists, uprooted the old vineyard and replanted it with Greek and international noble varieties in a linear trellised system. At the same time, he expanded with new plantings covering 23 acres at 160 m altitude, implementing new cultivation methods to achieve the best adaptation of the varieties to the mesoclimate of the area.
All these interventions were carried out with strict technical and scientific criteria, following a complete study of the terroir—ampelochora, in more traditional Greek terminology—of the estates, in order to achieve the best possible wine production from them.
The Gkanis vineyards are under organic management and certified by DIO.
